    British Bosses are the Biggest H & S Rule-Breakers

According to a survey conducted by a leading business-support services provider, British bosses lead the front when it comes to breaking health and safety rules in the workplace.

In a survey of 1000 business managers, 88 per cent admitted breaking at least one basic health and safety legislation in the previous week and of those 76 per cent admitted they had done this knowingly, these included:

    • Carrying out unsafe manual handling (51 per cent)
    • Leaving a slip or trip hazard on the workplace floor (44 per cent)
    • Using electrical equipment that had not been safety tested (49 per cent)
    • Risking a fall from height by using a chair or table to change a light-bulb or to reach a high shelf (26 per cent)

When asked, 56 per cent of Managers had pulled up at least one member of staff in the previous seven days staff for breaking health and safety rules but had flaunted the rules themselves, so it seems to be a case of “Do as I say, not do as I do”.

Bosses often try to make out that Health and safety is confusing, or they don’t know what is allowed and what is not, but the survey shows that they are aware what constitutes a hazard and are quick to police others but will flaunt the rules when it suits them.

If businesses want their workplace to be safe, bosses and managers need to “lead from the front”. If you need help doing this - give us a call on 01483 467270 Gulidford / 0113 286 9084 Garforth / 0808 108 8103 Glasgow.

      BSA AFFORDABLE TRAINING COURSES

Need people to recognise how good you are?

Clients and employers need to demonstrate that they have employed ‘competent’ people. For many, the easiest way to do this is show that someone has successfully attended a relevant course. So whilst a simple course is no substitute for years of experience, the certificate can make it a lot easier to demonstrate competence.

      Site Supervisors' Safety Training

Bernard Sims Associates are running a course specifically tailored for Supervisory staff on building and construction sites. This course will include:

    • The Health and Safety at Work Act and relevant regulations
    • Specific site issues, which will include site set up, controls and work at height
    • Tool box talks
    • Control of subcontractors
    • Health issues including asbestos and silica dust

This course will provide a sound basis for those either currently or intending to undertake supervisory services and it will provide an introduction to health, safety, welfare and environmental issues.

The training provided will be classroom based and use a variety of teaching and assessment methods which will provide a clear understanding of responsibilities and practical steps that will lead to a safe site.

Through continuous assessment and a multiple choice examination at the end of the course successful delegates will be issued with a certificate comparable to other training providers.

How to manage Health & Safety

With everything that goes on around us including the ‘day job’, few non specialist managers are aware of their practical obligations under the heading of ‘health & safety’. However, the legal responsibility still applies – especially to directors and senior managers.

Bernard Sims Associates are running a seminar specifically for people with businesses that are not regarded as hazardous like construction, but involving offices, factories, schools agencies, shops etc.

The seminar is ideal for MDs, directors or senior managers of small & medium sized businesses.

    This course will include:

    • Management of Health & Safety
    • Fire (Risk assessment and precautions)
    • Asbestos (Register and management plan)
    • Risk Assessments (VDU, CoSHH, Manual Handling, Work at Height)
    • Slips, trips and falls
    • Electricity (PAT Testing)
    • Remote working
    • Lone Working
    • Working from home
    • Driving
    • Legionella
    • First Aid
    • Stress
    • New and Expectant Mothers
    • Noise

The objective of the course is that a non health & safety manager gains an appreciation of their obligations in practice, knows what must be done and how to go about keeping themselves safe, healthy and legal.

A certificate of attendance will be issued at the end of the course which will in itself demonstrate that health & safety issues have been taken seriously and taken into account. This can be invaluable in the case of an accident or health claim.
