HSE BLITZ SAFER SITES EQUALS OPPORTUNITY FOR SAFER BUSINESS

NEW HSE SAFER SITES INITIATIVE TAKES TO THE STREETS

Its been just one year since the CDM 2015 Regs took full effect in October 2015. It seems that the HSE has allowed clients, contractors and the construction industry plenty of time to get used to the new role of Principal Designer and further attempts to get health and safety planned in from the start of each project. Although alerts about unannounced visits could just serve as warnings to put hard hats on and tidy up the site, it would be much more positive to treat this month as an opportunity to ensure that the fundamentals are being dealt with:

  1. Is the corporate attitude to both health and safety issues positive?
  2. Do you have the correct management processes in place?
  3. Are the workforce sufficiently competent and properly briefed?
  4. Are you getting help from your Principal Designer at an early stage so any improvements don’t mean redesigning projects?

Having plans in place to deal with these issues will assist any company deal with inevitable future incidents. Bearing in mind that fatalities due to accidents in construction have reduced substantially over the last decade, it is important now to look at the impact of less visible health issues: For example, there are still more people dying from asbestos related diseases than from road accidents in the UK.
